What turned you guys into furries? What sparked the interest, what solidified it? Were there any particular artists or people that got you into it? What part of the fandom do you most enjoy?

This would be a poll if they were active, but they aren't at the moment. I wonder if I could edit it later?

The first thing that sparked the interest was hearing about 'people who identify as animals and use litterboxes in schools,' which I have since learned was just a hoax/misunderstanding. I researched things about furries and soon found Fur Affinity. When I found that site I tried doodling an anthro ferret in the corner of my sketchbook, realizing that I am bad at drawing animals and struggle with people, so I expected it to be terrible, but it turned out great and I still haven't been able to replicate it XD

My first anthro drawing is also probably my favorite, and that drawing is what made me like "Yup. I'm a furry." Then I found this site and it was very exciting to be part of a larger community who share this same strange interest that people generally look down upon. So here I am.

This is the drawing. I used my fingers next to it to show you how tiny it really is.

I LOVED cartoons and video games growing up, so I think that definitely lay the foundation. (And, yes, all the duck characters were my favorite.)

A few years ago, one of the voice actors had a podcast where he would answer questions that fans submitted via social media. On a whim, I signed up for Twitter using Plucky Duck's name, even though Tiny Toons ended production some 25 years prior. and submitted my question, which did get answered. I think I followed some people in the animation industry, shared some screenshots from Tiny Toons, and made a few in-character jokes, and for awhile, didn't really do anything else with it. Until one day, I got a notification that my hero, Joe Alaskey, the guy who voiced Plucky, followed me out of nowhere! I wanted him to know I was a fan, so I felt compelled to do more in-character stuff, and when I ran out of screenshots, I commissioned some new art, and then started following the artists.

Those artists also produced and shared furry art, which I thought was really impressive. Eventually, my timeline was full of #furry and #fursuitfriday tags and pictures from cons and such. It all looked like so much fun. Then I learned you didn't have to have a suit to be a furry and set out to establish my own 'sona.

I got a few commissions for concept art and when I got a design I really liked, I signed up at FAF. And that was the day I officially considered myself a furry.

Still love the art and suiters but the best is definitely the amazing, fun, and talented people I met and get to interact with.

I like to think I was l always a furry, and just didn't know there was a word for it. I think it probably would have started with all the anthros in cartoons and movies and such, and characters in video games.

As for the fandom itself, furry art.

I feel like there's a wholesome answer here and a... well probably not so wholesome one. But hey, I'll share the wholesome one!

I grew up with dogs and through out my life found myself always admiring their ability to spread joy, optimism and playfulness. Then, all the media stuff most likely tipped me over the edge, especially Pokemon. I'm not the biggest fan who has seen every episode of the show or played every game, but I loved the art a lot! Digimon too, naturally, and Disney probably also had it's hand in there somewhere.

I think it took me a long while to seek out the community, I mainly just enjoyed the art for the longest time, but some would awoke a feeling of "Woooow ;w; I want to be that cute/cool too!" and I decided to seek out those who had the minds to create such feelings inside me.

I also kind of missed being on a forum tbh! The furry community was the first community I thought might be active, cool to chat with, and accepting of my silliness :3

I mean it took the not wholesome thing for me to actually find the fandom proper

Let's face it, there is a ton of furry porn

I think we all have an itch to scratch sometimes <w<

I must say, what I didn't expect was the incredible depth of RPs and fantastical creative writing in general this place has to offer o: I'm still rather blown away by it. I was expecting to be a rather untalented dweeb amongst incredible visual artists, it never occured to be that I might end up being an untalented dweeb amongst some of the most creative writers imagenable as well :D

I was a big Sonic fan back in the day, met other Sonic fans online, and we both interacted using Sonic character pics to represent ourselves, because people weren't super fond of sharing their faces publicly on the Internet. Hence avatars were usually recolors and fan arts, but there were also some very creative people who designed their own Sonic-style characters, to the point of roleplaying with them and writing stories about them. I would eventually create mine, too, and it was an anthro frog. :>

At some point, this was all forgotten for years, until I met a college mate who kinda indirectly presented me to the furry fandom — he happens to be an amazing artist, and I found out about FurAffinity through his DA page. Then, I found the FA forums. People using animal characters to represent themselves, interacting online, somehow that was so familiar to me... So I revamped my frog character and started to interact with the furries. To this day, and hopefully 'til the end.

Besides, I find it hard to not consider myself a furry, now that I'm better informed about the concept. The whole thing with talking animals is so appealing, I'd watch the cartoons too, love playing games with anthro characters, love being a frog, and so on, and so forth!

Personally I think my childhood movies kinda set the ground work. (Looking at you Robinhood!). But the fact I always enjoyed video games and shows with more anthropomorphic animals and even just animals that talked kinds "doomed" me from the start.

Fast forward to me becoming an adult the fandom seemed very welcoming and offered me an escape from some very traumatic experience and people in my life. It's hard to be sad hugging a huge plush doggo that's bright red and smiling. I guess long story short the community kinda turned me because everyone was just wonderful in a time of my life where I didn't have anyone in my day to day. If that makes sense.

(I have told this stuff here before, I'll be brief)

I sort of got into the fandom accidentally without even knowing that it existed: I used to frequent this now-defunct message board, which had an active RP community. It was customary there for everyone to have a animal character of their own, so I had one, too. Those obviously were fursonas (or actually mostly scalesonas in this particular case).... but at that point I had no idea that the furry fandom existed, that the other people on the forum were furries, or that I was unknowingly probably already one too :P

Then someone linked to SCFA/Yerf, and... well. I was like "oh. woww, OAAHH :O".
And that was that. Most people seem to have this acclimation period where they slowly skirt the fandom before deciding to give the whole 'furry' thing a shot, but that did not happen with me. I immediately went "WAIT THIS IS A THING, THIS EXISTS, THIS IS AWESOME, WHY AM I ONLY LEARNING THAT THIS EXISTS NOW?!?", and pretty much decided that, yep, I am now definitely 100% a furry too. And I was, and it was great, and I recommend it fully to absolutely everyone :3
