Silly Adventure Game

The first tutorial area is more-or-less complete, though I do want to fine-tune some of the movement code as at the moment it makes little gaffs like not walking up even slight 'lips' and tripping when it goes over a gap between otherwise-level platforms. The jumping is also a little bit clumsy but I'm not sure there's much I can do about that since I'm using the built-in physics system.

Here's a low-res overview of the first area:

Tutorial Area 2 is nearly complete. Took a while since I had to add new objects for replicators, weighing scales and two kinds of opening barriers plus new structural graphics and a bunch of dialog.

Small update:
  • Tutorial Area 3 is about half done
  • Torch must now have a battery installed before it will turn on
  • Moving target that must be illuminated by the torch to continue
  • Lockers that, when opened, throw all of their contents onto the floor
  • Added numerous sound effects for key actions
  • Fixed a few minor bugs
I need to add one more section of tutorial to teach the player how the inventory system works, tidy up a few of the more serious bugs, and design the 'start area' and the final cutscene for Chapter 1, then I think I'll have something approaching a mini-demo and can start on the game proper.

Incidentally, if anybody knows where I can find some good free-use sound effects for 'Sims' style pseudo-speech, I'd be grateful. I mostly use Free Sound for my sound effects, but all I've been able to find there is people saying actual sentences, and that's no good. I just need some appropriate-sounding burbling noises to help with game atmosphere.

Reversing voice lines seems to be a good start, perhaps mess with the pitch and add effects to make it more non-sensical?

I've messed around with reversing sound before, it's usually really obvious that's what it is. I also have the problem that my home set-up isn't really much good for recording. I've tried it in the past and it's really poor quality.

Here's a fun little game to try, though:
  1. Record yourself saying something
  2. Reverse it so that it plays backwards.
  3. Listen really carefully.
  4. Now, record yourself imitating what you heard.
  5. Take the result and reverse it again.
The game here is to try and imitate the reversed speech so accurately that you can understand the second recording when it's played backwards. If done right, you should be able to make out the original words - but it will give you a really weird accent!

Funny you should mention that. I used to have a toy that would record your voice and then you could play it back normally or in reverse. Eventually, I attempted to speak in reverse into that thing and play it back in reverse and see how different I would sound.

Had to do some basic restructuring of level 'building blocks' yesterday as it was getting too difficult to get oddly-shaped screens to slot into each other. As a result some of the existing rooms have changed shape slightly. At some point I'm going to go back and add some variant graphics to replace the ugly chunky blocks I'm using to fill in, in some areas, with more appropriate stuff like pipes, conduits and girders.

Final tutorial area is complete. Next up: the room that prints out your license and connects back to the starting screen. Once I've got that sorted, I'll be fixing up odds and ends, patching a few holes, and going for a full run-through of the tutorial to see if it works when done from the beginning.

Faust, I don't have a massive crazy set up, but I do have a focusrite scarlett with a podcast-esque microphone. If you want me to do any voices or sounds, just hit me up :3

It's looking good so far by any stretch :D

Ooo, if we're volunteering voices, I'll offer my voice/silly sounds/garbled mess. My mic won't be up to the quality of wuff-wuff's but it's not the basic kind either. :)

Thanks guys, it is appreciated and I might get back to you, but I'm not sure at this point of what I really want. I'm currently playing around with an AI voice generator for test purposes and anything that feels like an actual human voice, even remotely and even when it's speaking Sims-style gibberish, is kinda ruining the tone for me.

What I'm considering at the moment is getting a decent sample of something like 'Mmm' or 'Muh', and playing it repeatedly - once for each vowel or vowel-diphthong in each word, and modulating its frequency and length slightly based on the kind of phoneme to produce something similar to a person mumbling.

I'm fairly happy with the way this is working so far, but I can't for the life of me find a free screen recording app for Mac that allows you to record audio from the speakers, without a massive watermark. Tried several and so far they're all really exploitative with their pricing strategies and don't actually seem to work anyway.

Ok, had to jump through some weird hoops to get this to work. The upshot is, I can either HEAR the audio or RECORD it, but not both at the same time. Seriously annoying. Anyway, the important thing is it works, so here's the game intro again, now with new graphics, music and sound effects!
