As for advice, make sure to thin your paints before applying them to miniatures. So many headaches can be saved by making sure your paint isn't too thick. Get yourself a dirt cheap palette, put a blob of point of whatever colour you're going to use on it and then apply a little water to it until it's thin enough to use BUT not so thin that it's basically coloured water, because that will just drip down the miniature.
My big piece of advice is relax and don't worry about making superb miniatures from the start. I'll have to dig out my old guardsmen, they are rough, but it's a learning process. You're first set of miniatures are there for you to get experience with putting paint from brush to miniature.
